Driving north from Zurich towards the German border, you will pass a stunning lower Alpine landscape that is famed for its vineyards. We’ll cross the picture-postcard village farming village of Marthalen. Almost every building appears to be a traditional whitewashed half-timbered house. In Schaffhausen, the town closest to the falls, you will see the 16th century Munot Fortress atop a hill overlooking the old town, which boasts a series of frescoed Renaissance façades. By now your appetite will have been whetted in expectation of the main event: the stunning Rhine Falls.
