The visit to the falls is the highlight of the trip, which also takes in the picturesque landscape of northern Switzerland, a quaint village and an immaculately preserved Renaissance town. Driving north from Zurich towards the German border, you will pass a stunning lower Alpine landscape that is famed for its vineyards. We’ll cross the picture-postcard village farming village of Marthalen. Almost every building appears to be a traditional whitewashed half-timbered house. In Schaffhausen, the town closest to the falls, you will see the 16th century Munot Fortress atop a hill overlooking the old town, which boasts a series of frescoed Renaissance façades. By now your appetite will have been whetted in expectation of the main event: the stunning Rhine Falls. When Frankenstein author Mary Shelley visited the falls, she described them as ‘exceeding anything I had ever before seen’. More than 160 years later, the sensation is the same for many visitors.
